Chloroquine

 

Treats malaria and liver disease caused by parasites. Chloroquine may also be used to treat arthritis.

When Chloroquine Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to chloroquine or other medicines. You should not use chloroquine if you are pregnant or have a blood disorder.

How to Use Chloroquine:

Tablet

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often.
  • Tablets may be taken with food to reduce stomach upset.
  • Do not stop taking the medicine until your doctor tells you to.

If a dose is missed:

  • If you take your medicine once every 7 days, take the missed dose as soon as you can, then skip 7 days before taking another dose.
  • If you take one or more doses every day, take the missed dose as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next regular dose, wait until then to take your medicine and skip the missed dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.

How to Store and Dispose of Chloroquine:

  • Keep your tablets at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Keep all medicine away from children.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking penicillamine (Cuprimine® or Depen®), or cimetidine (Tagamet®).
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking chloroquine.

Warnings While Using Chloroquine:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Check with your doctor before taking Chloroquine if you have vision problems, liver disease, a blood disorder, G-6-PD deficiency, or psoriasis.
  • Children are very sensitive to Chloroquine, and accidental overdoses have occurred with small amounts of chloroquine.
  • Long-term use of this medicine may cause eye problems. Your doctor may want you to visit an eye doctor every 3 to 6 months while taking this medicine.

Possible Side Effects While Using Chloroquine

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Confusion, changes in behavior
  • Fainting
  • Skin rash
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Ringing in the ears or trouble hearing
  • Vision changes
  • Severe nausea or vomiting

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Upset stomach, nausea, loss of appetite
  • Dry mouth
  • Mild drowsiness or dizziness
  • Hair loss or change in hair color

When Chloramphenicol Should Not Be Used:

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to chloramphenicol. You should not use this medicine to treat or prevent any condition that has not been checked by your doctor.

How to Use Chloramphenicol:

Injectable

  • Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given. Chloramphenicol is given through a needle placed in one of your veins.
  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine.
  • Chloramphenicol is not for long-term use.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are using any antibiotics or any other medicines, especially medicines that may weaken your immune system, such as steroids or cancer medicines.

Warnings While Using Chloramphenicol:

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or liver disease.
  • Chloramphenicol lowers the number of some types of blood cells in your body. Because of this, you may bleed or get infections more easily. To help with these problems, avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Wash your hands often. Stay away from rough sports or other situations where you could be bruised, cut, or injured. Brush and floss your teeth gently. Be careful when using sharp objects, including razors and fingernail clippers.
  • Chloramphenicol should not be given to a child without your doctor’s supervision.

Possible Side Effects While Using Chloramphenicol:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
  • Bloody or black, tarry stools.
  • Severe headache, depression, or confusion.
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness.
  • Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or body aches.

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Mild nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
  • Pain, itching, burning, or swelling under your skin where the needle is placed.

Cephalexin

Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.

Treats bacterial infections. Belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics.

When Cephalexin Should Not Be Used:

You should not use Cephalexin if you have ever had an allergic reaction to cephalosporin medicine such as Ceclor®, Velosef®, or Suprax®.

How to Use Cephalexin:

Capsule, Tablet, Tablet for Suspension, Liquid

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to use and how often. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
  • Cephalexin comes with patient instructions. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • You may take Cephalexin with food or milk to avoid stomach upset.
  • Shake the oral liquid well each time you use it.
  • Measure your oral liquid dose carefully with a measuring spoon or a medicine cup.
  • Keep using Cephalexin for the full treatment time, even if you feel better after the first few doses. Your infection may not clear up if you stop using the medicine too soon.

If a dose is missed:

  • If you miss a dose or forget to use Cephalexin, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

How to Store and Dispose of Cephalexin:

  • Store capsules and tablets at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • You may keep the oral liquid in the refrigerator for 14 days. After that, throw away any unused liquid. Do not freeze.
  • Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking birth control pills or probenecid (Benemid®, ColBENEMID®) while taking cephalexin.

Warnings While Using Cephalexin:

  • Before taking Cephalexin, let your doctor know if you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin medicines.
  • If you have severe diarrhea while taking cephalexin, check with your doctor before taking medicine to stop the diarrhea.
  • Cephalexin may cause incorrect results with some urine sugar tests used by patients with diabetes.
  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding, talk to your doctor before taking Cephalexin.

  • Rash or hives
  • Swelling of the face, throat, or lips
  • Wheezing or trouble breathing

  • Nausea
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
  • Sore mouth or tongue
  • Joint aches and pains
